Saying Goodbye to Chai!

I hate to see this but Chai Nicole is leaving Highland Cigar Company and moving on to bigger things. So come join us at Highland Cigar Company Friday, October 7th from 7 PM until close while we wish Chai the very best in her new path!

I remember walking into Highland Cigar Company almost three years ago with my oldest Girlfriend and Chai being the first to greet us and treat us right.  She’d kept the scotch flowing, had the notes on all the drinks and knew more than an average 25 year old would about spirits and cigars.

She’s been a part of Mix, Mingle Indulge, a quarterly event at Highland that showcases female owned businesses and educates the smokers about the hobby we all have a passion for.

I hope you’ll raise a glass with me to toast this awesome woman in her next journey!

few photos from Highland’s 11th Anniversary

Had a blast last Saturday and just forgot to post about it cause it was THAT crazy LOL!

Rocky Patel May 20th, 2011 Edicion Unica

The local rep from Rocky Patel, Stacy Cross, showed up with plenty of goodies, specials, and raffles. Featured were the new Edicion Unica May 20th, 2011, among others. She shared space with General Cigars and a Rocky/General collaboration that escapes me and if she sees this post hopefully she’ll let me know what the other cigar was!

Notes on the Edicion Unica are as follows:

A nice, clean look with a paper bag brown wrapper.  Light with no visible flaws or veins. The pre-light is full of wood flavors and the typical stone fruit/raisiny tastes often found in cigars.

Stacy Cross of Rocky Patel

Upon lighting, the wood notes come across heavily reinforced. As with any Rocky Patel cigars I’ve smoked, the construction and draw are spot on.

Toward the middle of the cigar, sweet cedar notes present themselves along with deep pepper. Wood takes a back seat to (dark?) cocoa bitterness.

Touch of leather on the final end, and the cigar is mellow without being in your face overpowering.   A limited release, if you can find these, get your hands on them and give them a try!

Late Night Chai, Highland’s superstar GM

Of course Mad Moulton was in, making a ton of dope ass drinks that not only had plenty of flavor, but looked incredible to boot. Take a look at his Instagram for proof of his cocktail prowess!

For an 11th anniversary party, it was much lower in key than last year’s 10 year, but still an awesome place with great folks, drinks and cigars. It was indeed, an example of Pure Indulgence.

Wine Review: Le Douleur Exquise 2016

This wine from the region of Bergerac, France was pretty stellar I have to say. Taking it on the back of another, full bodied red from Australia showed that it had power behind it, without being overwhelming.

Oh, this was a selection sent from FirstLeaf.

The wine was almost a combination between straw and gold, with a beautiful bouquet of rich limestone, slight hints of grapefruit and of course, the typical heat from wine.

Very strong mineral notes. Upon taking the first sip, limestone and grapefruit hit my tongue along with those mineral notes I’d mentioned. Very tasty.  This wine is fairly supple and feels good in the mouth with enough weight that it could be a summer sipper or pair well with fish in the fall.

The breakdown:

60% Sauvignon Blanc
30% Semillon (surprised I didn’t get any herbaceous notes)
10% Muscadelle

A fantastic wine overall.

New Cigar Stock at Got Cigars? (Decatur, Georgia)

Many of you know I’m a weekly inhabitant of a spot in Decatur called “Got Cigars?”  They’re located at 232 E. Ponce De Leon Ave right off the Square in Decatur, GA.

Comfortable, friendly, knowledgeable.  This is a mini home or my “Decatur Office” when I’m in the mood not to work from home but don’t want to trek to Highland.

Along with standard products such as Fuente, Kristoff, La Flor Dominicana, and My Father, she has a rotating stock.

The shop owner has brought in a few new things to her quaint little shop.  I’ve had a chance to taste a lot of newer things so I’ll give you a small rundown.

Cohiba Blue – the value-priced cigar is crafted with a three-country blend of tobaccos from Honduras, Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic.  Notes of vanilla and cedar find their way onto the palate.

La Palina Nicaraguan Oscuro

Montecristo by AJ Fernandez- a traditional blend re-imagined by famed maker AJ Fernandez.  Developed in conjunction with the Groupo De Maestros, this Nicaraguan blend showcases more spice and strength than the core Monte.  I reviewed this cigar here.

La Palina Nicaragua Oscuro – A fairly complex cigar from La Palina, the construction is soild.  Notes of wood and leather mingle with pepper and fruit.

Romeo by AJ Fernandez – My personal favorite AJ/Groupo De

Romeo by AJ Fernandez

Maestros blend, the Romeo y Julieta blend re-imagined by AJ.  Like the Monte mentioned above, this cigar is blended in Nicaragua.  More robust, but fruit, black pepper, heavy wood and cedar notes mix with bacon smokiness for a delicious surprise. I reviewed that here last week.

Join us at Highland Cigar Company (Atlanta Events!)

Tuesday, June 27th || Join us for a very special rendition of Spirits and Stogies featuring @johnniewalker scotch and @ajfcigars. With special guest @ajfdon representing A. J. Fernandez cigars. You won’t want to miss it!

Black Label Trading Company – Salvation Toro

This is a new offering from a new (to us) boutique maker and I picked it up at PuroCigar.com.  First, a brief description:

The Salvation Toro features a beautiful, reddish-brown Ecuadorian sun-grown Habano wrapper, rolled around a Honduran binder with Nicaraguan filler tobaccos.

Pre-l

Salvation by BLTC

ight is spicy with some of that raisin/plum flavor.  Cigar feels solid in the fingers.   A solid blast of white pepper and black pepper hot right up front with strong wood notes.

About halfway through the cigar smooths out and has less power but still flavor.
Flavors mellow into more cedar and almost mint? The pepper backs off and the cigar is consistent the entire way through.
