Cigar Review – Casa Magna Dominican Churchill

Wrapper: Dominican CorojoCasa Magna Dominican
Binder: Dominican
Filler: Dominican Cuban Seed
Size: Gran Toro – 6X60
Body: Medium/Full

I picked up a flight sampler a few weeks back from CI and had a chance to try something new from Casa Magna.

The wrapper is a beautiful, reddish brown with a few veins.

The pre-light draw tastes of sweetness and spice, something I’m familiar with and a fan of, concerning Casa Magna. The Colorado is a long time favorite and I’m beginning to lean toward the “Manuel Quesada can do no wrong” camp.

Casa Magna Dominican2Upon lighting, the cigar starts off with hints of white pepper and a smooth taste. The draw is solid and consistent. I make sure to mention this because this is more or less (to me) a value cigar and like so many value cigars, possesses the potential to either disappoint, or be a very solid cigar.  The construction was solid, the cigar feeling like a cigar should in the hand.  Not too tight, nor was it rolled loosely. The cigar actually had heft in it.

This cigar gave me about an hour and a half of smoking time, with a mostly even burn that corrected itself after a short touch up. The flavors mellowed and the white pepper became less intense over the course of smoking, but overall, this cigar is a solid stick.

Cigar Review: Casa Magna Robusto

Rated Cigar of the year by Cigar Aficionado, this Nicaraguan Puro is the result of Manuel Quesada and Nestor Plascencia’s expert blending with an oily Colorado wrapper and Nicaraguan binder/filler for a medium to full bodied yet complex smoke.

The Casa Magna Robusto sports a hearty taste in a small package. Robust in flavor, the cigar itself starts off with a little pepper, cedar and spiciness before the mid point where dark coffee flavors take over. Full flavors hit one from the start and continue until the last third where the cigar mellows into sweeter coffee and cedar notes.

It’s a well constructed Robusto that burns evenly and has a light grey ash that held on for quite some time.

I paired this with water but couuld see a light bourbon or whiskey to match it quite nicely. I have to say I really enjoyed the cedar notes but found them on the back end of the palate, rather than the dark coffee notes that were more forthcoming.

Cigar Shop Update – Tobacco Road

Hello Folks,

Just got back from Tobacco Rd and thought I’d post a few pictures of their smoking lounge.

The nice leather chairs have provided me with a comfortable seating arrangement that’s allowed me hours of reading/smoking time.

As for selection, they offer the following:

Ashton (including one of the VSG sizes)
Romeo y Julieta Habano Reserve, Reserve Real and 1875
Arturo Fuente (including the Short Story)
H. Upman
Casa Magna
Partagas Black
Avo
Punch
Macanudo
Montecristo
Sancho Panza
Joya De Nicaragua
Rocky Patel 12 year Vintage
RP EDGE (robusto size 5X48 I think)
Cohiba
Acid
Oliva V, O and G series
Hoyo De Monterrey (Excalibur)
And a cuban seed house blend robusto and torpedo. The robusto is available in EMS or Maduor and I like the maduro bettter. It’s better constructed, not as strong but still a sweet, tasty maduro.

I’m not sure which NUB she’ll be bringing in but she’ll have those too. I’ve had those and they’re pretty good.

Most of the prices are lower than SF and I wonder if that’s due to taxes. The shop itself has to overcome ridding itself of the ghetto element so I understand they may be phasing out cigarette sales and some of the more less lucrative products that tend to attract the element as I call them, but Kathrine is determiend to give cigar smokers a place to call home.

She’ll be installing a TV soon in the lounge. I’ve been allowed to bring in alcohol under the “don’t act a fool” rule. My question is, once she rotates some of the stock out, what would you like to see in the humidor?

I’d like to see Padron, Cuesta Rey, Tatuaje, Punch Uppercut, along with an expansion of the RP line. How about you?

The shop is located at 14th and Franklin, close to 12th St. BART station. Come on down and enjoy a smoke!

Cheers!
